2025

Former Mathematics Instructor

Dr. Jayaseetha Rau Premanand passed away peacefully in the comfort of her own home on Saturday, February 15th, 2025, on her 96th birthday.

Jaya, as she was known, was born in Bangalore and grew up with her siblings there. She was a proud graduate of Maharani's College before boldly leaving India to study. Her parents supported her educational pursuits as she went to get graduate degrees and do research at the University of British Columbia and Catholic University before completing her PhD in Physics at Brandeis University in 1962. She will always have the distinction of being the first female Physics PhD there.

Jaya went back to India to work and soon married Dr. Visvanatha Premanand in 1963 at the Tirupathi Temple. They both worked and lived in Bombay for several years before embarking to the United States in 1967. They landed in Minneapolis and in many ways never left.

Jaya and Prem, as they were affectionately known, quickly became a part of the local Indian community as small as it was. They were instrumental in starting and developing the Indian music scene, getting the Hindu temple funded and built, and welcoming the ever-growing number of Indian families settling in the Twin Cities.

Dr. Premanand soon became a part of the faculty and fabric at Normandale Community College teaching mathematics until her retirement in 1993. She enjoyed teaching and won numerous awards. Upon her retirement, the Premanands immediately setup scholarship funds and provided numerous donations in kind of Indian culture to the school. When her husband passed away prematurely in 2010, Jaya donated generously to Normandale to have the school's theater dedicated in his name including a special provision for the Indian Music Society of Minnesota (IMSOM) to have special access to commemorate her husband's love of Indian music.

After her retirement, Jaya traveled extensively all over the world enjoying adventures with her husband, but she especially loved being back home in Bangalore with her family and friends in her house entertaining.

As accomplished as she was in her professional endeavors, she had many other interests. She was a voracious reader. She loved playing games including doing the Wordle every day. She loved discussing science and history. She had an unbelievable memory and served as the family historian. She was an avid fan of the stock market. She was also a certified gemologist who ran a very successful gem and jewelry business. She was an excellent conversationalist. She was a sensational friend. She was remarkably generous with her money and her time. She was an excellent chef, and no one ever missed a meal she was serving.

Perhaps, most notably, she was devoted to her family. She constantly made herself available, inquired on her many relatives, gave generously, and was genuine in her love and affection to all.

She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. While she and her husband did not have their own children, they were instrumental in the lives of her sibling's children and their families. She had a very special affection for her younger sister's three sons considering them her own. She was intensely proud of all her 'grandchildren' and especially their pursuit of education.

The family in particular wishes to thank 'Her Angel' and her family for their unbelievable support and love for Jaya and her many friends at RealLife Cooperative in Bloomington.
